In my last post I talked about the first 5 of the critical resume writing mistakes that most people make. Now I am going to discuss 5 more that you will want to stay clear from in order to get your resume to the top of the call back list.
6. Writing Your Life Story
This is a resume, not an autobiography. This is actually one of the biggest resume writing mistakes that happen most often. You don’t want to put your prospective employers to sleep or bore them with too many irrelevant facts.
7. Giving Away Too Many Personal Details
If you live in the United States and are looking for a job in this country do not include anything that blatantly gives away your race or age. No photo and no birth date. Not because they might be racist or think you are too old… it is because many employers are afraid of discrimination lawsuits so they usually avoid resumes with this type of information.
8. Using a Generic Resume Template
If I can sum up most resumes in one word it would be BORING. Why? Because almost everyone uses those fill in the blank resume forms and thinks they created the perfect resume. All I can say is, WRONG. Employers don’t want to read the same resumes over and over. Put some spice and originality into yours for heaven’s sake.
9. Putting More Emphasis on Education Than Experience
Like I said before, employers like results. If you have a lot of great experience make sure to put it first before you talk about your education. The only people who should list their education first are college graduates who don’t have any work history to show off.
10. Listing Your Achievements By Themselves
You want to list your achievements along with your work history and show how the fit together. Who cares about achievements if they don’t help you get the job done? I am begging you, if you really want to get the job, show results.
After you write your resume be sure to go through this list again. Make sure you aren’t using any of these resume writing mistakes and you are sure to make an impression.
